Kādambarī

Kādambarī is a Sanskrit prose romance by Bāṇabhaṭṭa, left unfinished at his death and completed by his son Bhūṣaṇabhaṭṭa. Its interwoven stories of love, curses, and rebirth are framed through nested narration.

Bāṇabhaṭṭa: A seventh-century Sanskrit prose writer at the court of Harṣavardhana. He composed the romance’s first part before his death.
Narrative frame: The outer narrative setting that introduces or contains a story within a story. Kādambarī uses successive narrators to reveal its past events gradually.
Harṣavardhana: A seventh-century Indian emperor who ruled much of northern India from Kannauj. Bāṇabhaṭṭa wrote at his court, the historical setting behind the romance’s composition.
Kādambarī (novel): A Bengali novel by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, published in 1874. Its title invokes Bāṇa’s romance within a later Indian literary tradition.
Candrapīḍa: The prince of Ujjayinī and one of the principal characters in Kādambarī. His journey and successive lives carry the romance’s central plot.

Mahāśvetā: An ascetic princess in Kādambarī whose grief follows the death of Puṇḍarīka. Her embedded story reveals the romance’s themes of devotion, loss, and rebirth.
