Kagoshima Prefecture

Kagoshima Prefecture occupies southern Kyushu and the Amami Islands. Its landscapes range from active volcanoes and subtropical islands to historic castle towns.

Sakurajima: An active stratovolcano in Kagoshima Bay, connected to the Ōsumi Peninsula by a lava flow from its 1914 eruption. Its frequent eruptions shape life and landscapes around Kagoshima City.

Ryukyu Kingdom: An independent maritime kingdom centered on Okinawa that maintained tributary relations with China and Japan. Satsuma’s invasion of the kingdom in 1609 tied southern Kyushu to Ryukyuan affairs.
