Kahanism

Kahanism is a Jewish ultranationalist ideology associated with Meir Kahane. It advocates Jewish sovereignty over the Land of Israel and the removal of its Arab population.

Meir Kahane: Meir Kahane was an American-born Israeli rabbi and politician who founded the Jewish Defense League and Kach. His writings and organizations established the ideology’s central claims and political vehicle.
Jewish nationalism: Jewish nationalism is the political movement for Jewish self-determination and national life. Kahanism is a radical nationalist current that defines sovereignty in explicitly Jewish terms.
Religious Zionism: Religious Zionism combines Jewish religious belief with support for Jewish national self-determination in Israel. Unlike Kahanism, it encompasses movements that do not endorse expelling Arab populations.
Israeli elections: Israeli elections choose members of the Knesset through proportional representation. Kach’s electoral success and later exclusion made Kahanism a test of democratic limits.

Kach: Kach was an Israeli political party founded by Meir Kahane, later barred from elections and designated a terrorist organization. It translated Kahanist ideas into an electoral platform and parliamentary campaign.
Zionism: Zionism is the movement supporting Jewish self-determination in the historic Land of Israel. Kahanism develops within Zionist politics while advancing a more exclusionary vision of sovereignty.
Revisionist Zionism: Revisionist Zionism is a Zionist movement associated with Ze'ev Jabotinsky that advocated a Jewish state and territorial claims. Kahanism shares its assertive nationalism but presses exclusionary policies beyond the broader movement.
Kach and Kahane Chai as terrorist organizations: Kach and Kahane Chai are organizations designated as terrorist organizations by Israel and several other governments. These designations formalized the state’s response to violent activity associated with the movement.
Itamar Ben-Gvir: Itamar Ben-Gvir is an Israeli politician and leader of Otzma Yehudit who has served as national security minister. His political career has renewed debate over the reach of Kahanist ideas in government.
