Kai Province

Kai Province was a historical province in central Japan, corresponding largely to modern Yamanashi Prefecture. Its mountainous terrain and inland location shaped its transport, agriculture, and political history.

Gokishichidō: A historical system dividing Japan into five central provinces and seven circuits. Kai lay outside the five central provinces, within the eastern Tōkaidō circuit.
Kōfu: The capital city of Yamanashi Prefecture, located in the Kōfu Basin. Kōfu developed as Kai’s principal urban and political center.
Koshu: A historical name associated with Kai Province and a modern name for Yamanashi wine. The name survives in regional products and identities rooted in former Kai.
Shinano Province: A large historical province in central Japan, corresponding mainly to modern Nagano Prefecture. Shinano bordered Kai and formed the principal direction of Takeda expansion.
Tōkaidō: A major historical route and administrative circuit linking the capital region with eastern Japan. Kai belonged to the Tōkaidō circuit, though it was not on the coastal highway.
Kōfu Basin: An inland basin in Yamanashi Prefecture surrounded by mountains. The basin concentrated settlement and cultivation within Kai’s rugged terrain.
Koshu grape: A white grape variety cultivated in Japan, especially in Yamanashi Prefecture. Its regional cultivation connects modern wine production with Kai’s agricultural landscape.
Suruga Province: A historical province on Japan’s Pacific coast, corresponding largely to eastern Shizuoka Prefecture. Suruga’s coastal access contrasted with Kai’s landlocked mountain setting.
Ritsuryō: The system of law and government through which early Japanese rulers organized the state. Kai’s provincial administration developed within the ritsuryō state framework.
Takeda Shingen: A sixteenth-century Japanese daimyo who ruled Kai and expanded Takeda power. His rule made Kai a base for one of the Sengoku period’s strongest domains.
