Kainite

Kainite is a hydrated potassium magnesium sulfate chloride mineral found in evaporite deposits. It is mined as a source of potassium fertilizer.

Evaporite: A sedimentary rock formed by precipitation of dissolved minerals as water evaporates. Kainite is one of the soluble minerals that can precipitate in evaporite deposits.
Brine: Water containing a high concentration of dissolved salts. Evaporation concentrates brines until kainite and related salts can crystallize.
Potassium fertilizer: A fertilizer that supplies plants with potassium, an essential nutrient for growth and stress regulation. Kainite can be processed or applied to supply potassium to crops.
Stassfurt: A German town associated with the historic discovery and mining of potash deposits. Kainite is part of the classic potash-bearing evaporite succession of the Stassfurt area.

Polyhalite: A hydrated potassium calcium magnesium sulfate mineral found in evaporite deposits. Polyhalite is a related potash mineral that can occur in the same evaporite successions.
