Kakeya conjecture

The Kakeya conjecture asserts that any set in n-dimensional space containing a unit line segment in every direction has Hausdorff dimension n. It remains open in dimensions three and higher.

Kakeya set: A set containing a unit line segment in every direction in Euclidean space. These are the sets whose Hausdorff dimension the conjecture predicts.
Kakeya needle problem: The problem of finding the smallest region in which a unit segment can be turned through a full rotation. This planar rotation question motivated Kakeya’s study of small direction-spanning sets.
