Knowra Kalahari Desert Kalahari Desert The Kalahari is a vast, mostly sandy semi-arid region of southern Africa, extending across Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. Its drylands support distinctive wildlife, vegetation, and human communities.
Semi-arid climate : A climate with low, variable rainfall that is insufficient for reliable crop production without additional water. The Kalahari is dry, but its rainfall and vegetation distinguish it from hyper-arid deserts.
Kalahari climate : The region’s climate, marked by hot summers, cool winters, and highly variable seasonal rainfall. Rainfall timing and variability determine when plants grow and animals can find water.
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park : A protected area spanning Botswana and South Africa, established to conserve ecosystems across their border. It protects a representative expanse of Kalahari dunes, dry riverbeds, and wildlife.
Nǀuu language : A critically endangered Tuu language of southern Africa, traditionally spoken by members of the ǂKhomani community. Its survival is part of the cultural history of Kalahari-linked San communities.
Kalahari sands : Extensive deposits of wind-blown and reworked sand covering much of the Kalahari Basin. These red sands shape the region’s soils, dunes, and plant communities.
Dune stabilization : The reduction of sand movement when vegetation, crusts, or other surface features hold dunes in place. Plant cover helps keep much of the Kalahari’s sandy surface from becoming shifting dunes.
Central Kalahari Game Reserve : A large wildlife reserve in Botswana’s Kalahari, established in 1961. Its scale makes it a major case of wildlife protection in the region.
ǂKhomani San : A San community of South Africa’s Northern Cape with ancestral ties to the southern Kalahari. Their land claims and cultural revival are closely connected to the region’s protected areas.
Kalahari Basin : A large southern African sedimentary basin encompassing much of Botswana and parts of neighboring countries. The desert occupies much of this broader geological and drainage basin.
Ephemeral river : A river channel that flows only after rainfall or during limited seasonal periods. Intermittent channels carry water through parts of the Kalahari after rains.
