Kali Yuga

Kali Yuga is the fourth and final age in a Hindu cosmic cycle, traditionally marked by declining virtue, shortened lifespans, and spiritual disorder.

Yuga: A vast age in Hindu cosmology, one of four successive periods in a recurring cycle. Kali Yuga is the final member of this four-age sequence.
Dharma: A principle of duty, order, and right conduct in Indian religions. Yuga traditions describe virtue and social order as diminishing through successive ages.
Mahabharata: An ancient Sanskrit epic recounting the conflict between the Pandavas and Kauravas. Its war and aftermath are associated in tradition with the onset of Kali Yuga.
Dvapara Yuga dating: Modern claims that the present era belongs to Dvapara Yuga rather than Kali Yuga. These chronologies reject the commonly cited placement of the present within Kali Yuga.
Chatur Yuga: A complete Hindu cycle comprising Satya, Treta, Dvapara, and Kali Yugas. It places Kali Yuga within the full cycle whose decline it completes.
Kalki: The future tenth avatar of Vishnu, prophesied to appear at the end of Kali Yuga. Kalki’s arrival signals the age’s end and the restoration of cosmic order.
Krishna: A major Hindu deity, revered as an avatar of Vishnu and a teacher in the Bhagavad Gita. Traditional accounts connect Krishna’s departure from the world with Kali Yuga’s beginning.
Sri Yukteswar: An Indian spiritual teacher who proposed a revised chronology of the yuga cycle. His model places the modern world in an ascending Dvapara Yuga, not Kali Yuga.
Satya Yuga: The first and most virtuous age in a Hindu cycle of four yugas. Its idealized order contrasts with Kali Yuga’s characteristic decline.
Bhagavata Purana: A Sanskrit Hindu scripture centered on devotion to Vishnu and his avatars. Its accounts describe Kali Yuga’s conditions and the role of devotion within it.
