Kamakura period

A period of Japanese history, conventionally dated 1185–1333, when the Kamakura shogunate governed alongside the imperial court. It saw warrior rule consolidate and new forms of Buddhism spread.

Kamakura shogunate: Japan’s military government, established by Minamoto no Yoritomo and based in Kamakura. Its institutions made warrior rule durable while the imperial court remained in Kyoto.
Goseibai Shikimoku: A 1232 legal code issued by the Kamakura shogunate for its warrior government. It codified judgments and norms for the growing samurai administration.
Genpei War: A conflict from 1180 to 1185 between the Taira and Minamoto clans for control of Japan. The Minamoto victory cleared the way for Yoritomo’s military government.
Shogun: A Japanese military ruler whose authority was formally delegated by the emperor. The title names the office at the center of Kamakura’s warrior government.
Siege of Hōjūjidono: The 1184 attack in Kyoto in which Minamoto no Yoshinaka was defeated by Yoritomo’s forces. It illustrates the internal Minamoto conflict that preceded the shogunate’s consolidation.
Shikken: The regent who exercised power on behalf of the Kamakura shogun. The Hōjō regents came to direct the shogunate through this office.
Jōdo Shinshū: A Japanese Buddhist tradition founded by Shinran, centered on reliance on Amida Buddha. Its accessible teachings gained followers amid the period’s religious transformations.
Minamoto no Yoritomo: The founder and first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate. His rule established the political order associated with the period.
Samurai: Members of Japan’s hereditary warrior class, who served military and political leaders. Samurai supplied the military service and administration on which shogunal rule depended.
Battle of Dan-no-ura: The 1185 naval battle in which the Minamoto defeated the Taira, ending the Genpei War. Its outcome secured Minamoto dominance before the Kamakura government was fully established.
