Kanō Masanobu

Kanō Masanobu (c. 1434–1530) was a Japanese painter who established the Kanō school. His work helped bring Chinese-inspired ink painting into the service of the Ashikaga shogunate.

Kanō school: A Japanese painting tradition founded by Kanō Masanobu and continued by his descendants and pupils. Masanobu founded the workshop tradition that became a dominant school of Japanese painting.
Ink wash painting: A painting practice that uses ink diluted with water to create tones, forms, and expressive brushwork. Masanobu worked within the ink-painting practice prized by the Ashikaga court.
