Kanō school

A Japanese painting tradition founded by Kanō Masanobu in the fifteenth century. Its artists combined Chinese-derived ink techniques with Japanese decorative styles and served successive military governments.

Chinese ink painting: A painting tradition using ink washes and brushwork, developed in China and influential across East Asia. Kanō artists adapted Chinese ink techniques, especially for landscapes and monochrome compositions.

Kanō Tanyū: A seventeenth-century Kanō painter who served the Tokugawa shogunate and became one of its leading artists. His career shows how the school adapted its prestige to Tokugawa rule.
Nijō Castle: A seventeenth-century castle in Kyoto that served as a residence for Tokugawa shoguns. Its painted interiors preserve major Kanō works made for the shogunate.
Hasegawa school: A Japanese painting school founded by Hasegawa Tōhaku in the late sixteenth century. Its restrained ink landscapes offered an alternative to Kanō’s more monumental decorative manner.
