Kantō region

A region of eastern Honshu, Japan, comprising Tokyo and six neighboring prefectures. It is centered on Tokyo, the country’s capital and largest metropolitan area.

Tokyo: Japan’s capital and a metropolis on the eastern coast of Honshu. The region’s political and population center is Tokyo.
Greater Tokyo Area: The extensive urban and commuting region centered on Tokyo and adjoining prefectures. It captures the metropolitan system that extends beyond Tokyo’s administrative boundaries.
Edo: The city renamed Tokyo when it became Japan’s imperial capital in 1868. Edo’s growth established the urban core of modern Kantō.
Kansai region: A region of western Honshu centered on cities including Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe. Kansai is Kantō’s major regional counterpart, with a distinct historical urban center.
Kanagawa Prefecture: A prefecture south of Tokyo, including Yokohama and the Miura Peninsula. Its port cities and suburbs form Kantō’s densely populated southern edge.
Tokyo Bay: An inlet of the Pacific Ocean bordered by Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Chiba. Its ports, reclaimed land, and industrial waterfront shape the region’s economy.
Tokugawa Ieyasu: The founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. His choice of Edo as the shogunate’s seat transformed the region’s political importance.
Chūbu region: A region of central Honshu between eastern and western Japan. Chūbu lies west of Kantō and includes the transition toward Japan’s central mountains.
Saitama Prefecture: A landlocked prefecture immediately north of Tokyo. Its cities are closely integrated with the capital’s northern suburbs.
Narita International Airport: An international airport in Chiba Prefecture serving the Tokyo metropolitan area. It connects Kantō’s population and businesses to destinations worldwide.
