Knowra Kaolinite Kaolinite Kaolinite is a soft, usually white clay mineral composed of hydrated aluminum silicate. It commonly forms when feldspar-rich rocks weather and is the main mineral in kaolin.
Kaolin : Kaolin is a clay-rich material composed mainly of kaolinite and used in ceramics, paper, and other products. Kaolinite is the principal mineral component of most kaolin deposits.
Chemical weathering : Chemical weathering alters minerals through reactions with water, acids, oxygen, or other substances. Hydrolysis during chemical weathering can transform feldspar into kaolinite.
Porcelain : Porcelain is a hard, dense ceramic made from refined clay and fired at high temperatures. Kaolinite supplies alumina and contributes to porcelain’s fired strength and pale color.
Smectite : Smectites are expandable clay minerals whose layers can admit water and exchangeable ions. Unlike kaolinite, smectite commonly swells as water enters between layers.
Phyllosilicate : Phyllosilicates are silicate minerals built from sheets of linked tetrahedra and octahedra. Kaolinite belongs to this sheet-structured mineral group.
Hydrolysis : Hydrolysis is a chemical reaction in which water participates in breaking or forming chemical bonds. It breaks down feldspar structures during kaolinite-forming alteration.
Paper coating : Paper coating is a surface layer applied to paper to improve smoothness, brightness, and print quality. Fine kaolin particles, chiefly kaolinite, provide a smooth and bright coating.
Illite : Illite is a non-expanding clay mineral with potassium ions between its layered sheets. Its interlayer potassium distinguishes illite from kaolinite’s hydrogen-bonded layers.
Kaolinite group : The kaolinite group is a family of clay minerals with related one-to-one layer structures. Its mineral relatives share structural features with kaolinite.
Feldspar : Feldspars are abundant rock-forming aluminosilicate minerals found in many igneous and metamorphic rocks. Feldspar is a common parent mineral from which kaolinite forms.
