Karakalpakstan

Karakalpakstan is an autonomous republic in northwestern Uzbekistan, bordering the Aral Sea and centered on the lower Amu Darya River. Its capital is Nukus, and most residents are Karakalpaks and Uzbeks.

Amu Darya: The major Central Asian river that flows through Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan before reaching the Aral Sea region. Its lower reaches cross Karakalpakstan and sustain settlements and irrigated agriculture.
Aral Sea disaster: The ecological and humanitarian crisis caused by the rapid shrinkage of the Aral Sea after river water was diverted for irrigation. Its consequences are especially severe in Karakalpakstan’s northern districts.
Karakalpaks: A Turkic-speaking people indigenous to the lower Amu Darya region of Central Asia. Their language and identity give the republic its name and distinct cultural character.
Savitsky Museum: An art museum in Nukus known for its collection of Russian and Uzbek avant-garde works and Karakalpak material culture. Its collections make Nukus a distinctive center for regional art and heritage.
Aral Sea: A formerly vast inland lake in Central Asia, drastically reduced by twentieth-century river diversion. Karakalpakstan borders its southern remnant and bears severe effects of its retreat.
Aralkum Desert: A desert formed on the exposed seabed of the retreating Aral Sea. Windblown salt and dust from the former seabed affect communities in Karakalpakstan.
Karakalpak language: A Turkic language spoken chiefly by the Karakalpak people in Uzbekistan and neighboring areas. It is an official language of the republic alongside Uzbek.
Karakalpakstan flag: The flag of Karakalpakstan, with blue, yellow, and green horizontal fields and a crescent and stars. Its design serves as a visible emblem of the republic’s separate identity within Uzbekistan.
Kyzylkum Desert: A large desert between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Its arid terrain covers much of Karakalpakstan’s eastern and southern landscape.
Desertification: The degradation of dryland environments through climatic variation and human activity. Water stress and land degradation threaten farming and grazing in the republic.
