Karakum Canal

The Karakum Canal is a major irrigation and water-supply channel carrying water from the Amu Darya across Turkmenistan and the Karakum Desert.

Amu Darya: A major Central Asian river flowing from the Pamir region toward the Aral Sea. The canal draws its water from this river.
Aral Sea: A formerly large inland lake in Central Asia, now greatly reduced by river diversion and water use. Canal withdrawals from the Amu Darya contributed to the river depletion behind the sea’s decline.
