Karaoke

Karaoke is entertainment in which people sing along to recorded music while following displayed lyrics. Performances commonly use instrumental backing tracks and a microphone.

Karaoke machine: An audio device or system that plays backing tracks and displays lyrics for singers. It combines the music playback and lyric display at the center of a karaoke setup.
Daisuke Inoue: A Japanese musician credited with inventing an early karaoke machine in the early 1970s. His coin-operated machine made recorded accompaniment available for customer singing.
Karaoke bar: A venue where customers sing karaoke, either on a shared stage or in private rooms. Bars make karaoke a social activity centered on shared food, drink, and performance.
Audience participation: A performance practice in which spectators take an active role in the event. Karaoke shifts audience members from listeners into performers.
Karaoke track: A song recording arranged for singing along, usually with the lead vocal removed or reduced. It supplies the accompaniment while leaving the melody for the performer.
Karaoke box: A private room equipped for groups to sing karaoke, usually rented by time. Private karaoke rooms became a defining venue format in Japan.
Karaoke contest: A competition in which participants perform songs and are judged or voted on. Contests turn informal singing into a scored public performance.
Amateur performance: A public or social performance by someone who is not performing professionally. Karaoke gives nonprofessionals a setting to perform familiar songs.
Lyric video: A music video that displays a song's words in time with its audio. Karaoke systems use timed lyrics so singers can follow the song.
8-track cartridge: A magnetic tape format in a continuous loop, widely used for prerecorded audio in the 1960s and 1970s. Early karaoke machines used tape-based playback before digital systems became common.
