Karelian Isthmus

The Karelian Isthmus is a region of northwestern Russia between the Gulf of Finland and Lake Ladoga, historically contested between Finland and Russia.

Winter War: A 1939–1940 war in which the Soviet Union invaded Finland. The war ended with Finland ceding much of the isthmus to the Soviet Union.
Mannerheim Line: A Finnish defensive system built across the Karelian Isthmus before the Winter War. It was designed to slow a Soviet advance across the isthmus.
Karelia: A historical region in northern Europe spanning parts of Finland and Russia. The isthmus is the southernmost part of this broader region.
Finnish Karelia: The parts of Karelia historically associated with Finland, including territories ceded to the Soviet Union. The isthmus became central to Finnish accounts of lost Karelia.
