Karim Khan Zand

Karim Khan Zand was the founder of Iran’s Zand dynasty and its ruler from 1751 until his death in 1779. He governed as regent rather than claiming the title of shah.

Zand dynasty: An Iranian dynasty that ruled much of Iran from the mid-eighteenth century until 1794. Karim Khan founded this dynasty and established its governing authority.
Nader Shah: An Iranian ruler and military commander who founded the Afsharid dynasty and ruled from 1736 until 1747. His assassination in 1747 opened the succession struggle in which Karim Khan gained power.
Abol-Fath Khan Bakhtiari: A Bakhtiari leader who shared power with Karim Khan and Ali Mardan Khan during the early Zand rise. The coalition initially recognized Abol-Fath as ruler while Karim Khan commanded its forces.
Vakil: A Persian title meaning representative or deputy, used by Karim Khan for his position as ruler. By ruling as Vakil rather than shah, Karim Khan presented authority as guardianship on behalf of the Safavid dynasty.
Shiraz: A city in southwestern Iran, historically a major center of Persian culture and government. Karim Khan made Shiraz his capital and transformed it into the Zand court’s center.

Laki people: An Iranian ethnic group whose communities are concentrated in western Iran. Karim Khan belonged to the Zand, a Laki tribal group from western Iran.
