Karl Barth

Karl Barth was a Swiss Reformed theologian whose emphasis on God’s self-revelation in Jesus Christ reshaped twentieth-century Protestant theology.

Revelation: The disclosure of truths or realities that are otherwise unknown or inaccessible. Barth treats God’s self-disclosure as the source and measure of Christian theology.
Church Dogmatics: Karl Barth’s multivolume theological work, published from 1932 to 1967. It develops his account of revelation, election, creation, and reconciliation in sustained detail.
The Epistle to the Romans: Karl Barth’s commentary on Paul’s Letter to the Romans, first published in 1919 and extensively revised in 1922. Its stark account of divine judgment and grace announced Barth’s theological turn.
Charlotte von Kirschbaum: A German theologian and close collaborator who worked with Karl Barth on the Church Dogmatics. Her research and editorial work contributed substantially to Barth’s major theological project.
Barmen Declaration: A 1934 statement rejecting Nazi efforts to control the German Protestant Church. Barth drafted its theological declaration that Jesus Christ alone is the church’s Lord.
Jesus Christ: The central figure of Christianity, understood as the incarnate Son of God and Messiah. For Barth, God is known decisively through Jesus Christ.
Analogia fidei: The analogy of faith: knowledge of God made possible by God’s self-revelation. Barth uses it against the idea that human beings can infer God from worldly similarities.
Safenwil: A Swiss village where Karl Barth served as a Reformed pastor from 1911 to 1921. Pastoral work there confronted Barth with the limits of the theology he had studied.
Eduard Thurneysen: A Swiss Reformed pastor and theologian who was a close friend and correspondent of Karl Barth. Their exchange helped shape the theological questions behind Barth’s Romans commentary.
Natural theology: The attempt to gain knowledge of God through nature, reason, or human experience apart from special revelation. Barth’s rejection of natural theology became a defining point of dispute with Emil Brunner.
