Karl Drais

Karl Drais (1785–1851) was a German inventor best known for the Laufmaschine, a steerable, two-wheeled vehicle propelled by pushing against the ground with the feet.

Laufmaschine: An early two-wheeled vehicle steered by a handlebar and propelled by its rider’s feet pushing against the ground. Drais’s best-known invention, publicly demonstrated in 1817.
Bicycle and motorcycle geometry: The study of how frame dimensions, steering, and component placement affect two-wheeled vehicle handling. The Laufmaschine established a steerable two-wheel arrangement whose geometry later designs refined.
