Karl Mannheim

Karl Mannheim (1893–1947) was a Hungarian-born sociologist who argued that thought and knowledge are shaped by social and historical position, especially in his analyses of ideology and utopia.

Sociology of knowledge: The study of how social conditions shape the production, circulation, and acceptance of knowledge. Mannheim helped establish this field by making the social situatedness of thought its central problem.
Relationism: The view that ideas gain meaning through their relations to particular historical and social situations. Mannheim proposed relationism to explain situated knowledge without treating every claim as equally arbitrary.
Budapest Sunday Circle: A discussion group of Hungarian intellectuals formed around Georg Lukács in the years before the First World War. Mannheim’s early intellectual formation took place amid this circle’s debates about culture and society.
Ideology and Utopia: Mannheim’s 1929 book examining how social groups shape political thought and how utopian ideas can alter society. This book presents his best-known account of ideology, utopia, and the sociology of knowledge.
Ideology: A system of ideas that interprets social and political life and can legitimize or challenge existing arrangements. Mannheim distinguished partial distortions from comprehensive worldviews shaped by group position.
Social location: A person’s position within social structures, including class, generation, and political affiliation. Mannheim used group position to explain why different communities develop distinct interpretations.
Hungarian Soviet Republic: A short-lived communist state established in Hungary in 1919. Its collapse contributed to Mannheim’s emigration from Hungary and the political upheaval behind his early career.
Karl Marx: A German philosopher and political economist whose critique of ideology linked ideas to class relations and material interests. Mannheim extended the social analysis of ideas beyond Marx’s focus on class and economic structure.
Utopia: An imagined social order whose ideals challenge or exceed the institutions of the present. Mannheim treated utopian thought as a socially situated force capable of transforming existing reality.
Total conception of ideology: An analysis that treats an entire system of thought as shaped by the social position of its proponents. Mannheim’s total conception shifts analysis from isolated errors to whole worldviews.
