Karl Pearson

Karl Pearson (1857–1936) was an English mathematician and statistician who helped establish mathematical statistics and introduced the Pearson correlation coefficient.

Pearson correlation coefficient: A statistic that measures the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two quantitative variables. Pearson introduced this measure, now among the most widely used statistics.
Method of moments: A method of estimating model parameters by equating sample moments with the corresponding theoretical moments. Pearson used moment matching to estimate parameters for his proposed probability distributions.
