Knowra Karl Schwarzschild Karl Schwarzschild Karl Schwarzschild (1873–1916) was a German physicist and astronomer whose work ranged from stellar structure and astrophotography to the first exact solution of Einstein’s field equations.
Schwarzschild solution : The exact, static, spherically symmetric solution of Einstein’s vacuum field equations. Schwarzschild derived it in 1916, establishing the first exact solution of Einstein’s equations.
General relativity : Einstein’s theory of gravity, in which matter and energy shape spacetime and free-falling bodies follow its geometry. Schwarzschild’s best-known result is an exact solution within this theory.
Göttingen University : A German research university founded in 1737 and known for its influence on mathematics and the sciences. Schwarzschild studied astronomy there and completed his doctorate in 1896.
Stellar structure : The internal arrangement of a star’s pressure, temperature, density, and energy-producing regions. Schwarzschild developed mathematical models of stars before his work on general relativity.
Hugo von Seeliger : A German astronomer known for work on celestial mechanics, stellar statistics, and the structure of the universe. Schwarzschild’s early astronomical career developed within the German tradition Seeliger represented.
Schwarzschild radius : The radius at which a spherical mass’s Schwarzschild solution has an event horizon. This characteristic radius is named for the solution Schwarzschild found.
Spherical symmetry : Invariance under rotations about a central point, often used to simplify physical systems. This symmetry reduces the gravitational field equations to the form Schwarzschild solved.
Potsdam Astrophysical Observatory : A German astronomical research institution established in Potsdam in the nineteenth century. Schwarzschild became its director in 1909, before his wartime service.
Radiative transfer : The transport of energy by radiation through matter that absorbs, emits, or scatters light. Schwarzschild contributed a foundational equation for radiation moving through stellar atmospheres.
Hendrik Lorentz : A Dutch physicist whose work on electromagnetism and relativity shaped modern theoretical physics. Schwarzschild corresponded with Lorentz about the foundations of Einstein’s new theory.
