Karl Ziegler

Karl Waldemar Ziegler (1898–1973) was a German chemist whose organometallic research led to catalysts for producing polyethylene and other polymers.

Organometallic chemistry: The study of compounds containing bonds between carbon atoms and metals. Ziegler’s catalyst research grew from reactions of organometallic compounds.
Ziegler–Natta catalyst: A catalyst system, commonly based on a transition-metal compound and an organoaluminum co-catalyst, used to polymerize olefins. Ziegler’s ethylene catalysts and Giulio Natta’s stereospecific catalysts gave the system its name.
Marburg University: A public research university in Marburg, Germany, founded in 1527. Ziegler studied and began his academic career there.
Giulio Natta: An Italian chemist who developed stereospecific polymerization catalysts and shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Ziegler. Natta extended related catalyst chemistry to produce stereoregular polymers.
Ethylene: A colorless hydrocarbon with formula C₂H₄ and a carbon–carbon double bond. Ziegler’s catalysts join ethylene molecules into polyethylene chains.
Cossee–Arlman mechanism: A widely used model in which an olefin coordinates to a metal and inserts into a metal–carbon bond during polymer growth. This mechanism describes how coordination catalysts can extend polyethylene chains.
Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Coal Research: A German research institute established in Mülheim to investigate coal and related chemistry. Ziegler directed the institute from 1943, where his group pursued organometallic chemistry.
Hermann Staudinger: A German chemist who established the macromolecular hypothesis and received the 1953 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His account of polymers as giant molecules provided a foundation for Ziegler’s polymer research.
Polymerization: A chemical process that joins many small molecules into a polymer. Ziegler’s catalytic work made polymerization of ethylene possible under mild conditions.
Organoaluminum compound: A compound containing a bond between aluminum and carbon. Organoaluminum reagents helped activate transition-metal catalysts in Ziegler’s polymerization research.
