Karnak

Karnak is a vast temple complex on the east bank of the Nile at Thebes, built over centuries and dedicated chiefly to Amun and related deities.

Precinct of Amun-Re: The largest enclosure at Karnak, centered on the temple of Amun-Re. This precinct contains Karnak’s principal temple and most of its monumental additions.
Thebes, Egypt: An ancient Egyptian city on the east bank of the Nile, known today as Luxor. Karnak formed the northern sacred center of ancient Thebes.
Amun: An ancient Egyptian god who became a principal deity of Thebes and was often joined with the sun god Re. Karnak’s central sanctuary was devoted chiefly to Amun and his cult.
Opet Festival: An annual Theban festival in which Amun’s cult image traveled from Karnak to Luxor Temple. The procession linked Karnak’s sanctuary with the city’s southern temple.
Obelisks of Hatshepsut: Two granite obelisks erected by Hatshepsut at Karnak, one of which remains standing. They are enduring markers of Hatshepsut’s building campaign at the temple.
Hypostyle Hall: A vast columned hall between the second and third pylons in the Precinct of Amun-Re. Its forest of columns forms Karnak’s best-known interior space.
Middle Kingdom of Egypt: A period of Egyptian political reunification and cultural growth, conventionally dated about 2055–1650 BCE. The earliest substantial temple building at Karnak dates to the Middle Kingdom.
Amun-Re: A major Egyptian deity combining Amun, god of Thebes, with the sun god Re. The temple’s main precinct honored the deity whose cult underpinned Karnak’s prominence.
Bark of Amun: A ceremonial boat carrying the cult image of Amun during religious processions. The bark carried Amun from Karnak during major public festivals.
White Chapel of Senusret I: A limestone shrine built by Senusret I and later dismantled for reuse in Karnak’s Third Pylon. Its reconstruction reveals an early monument hidden within a later structure.
