Karoo Basin

The Karoo Basin is a vast sedimentary basin covering much of southern Africa. Its rock record preserves environments, ecosystems, and tectonic events from the late Paleozoic through the early Mesozoic.

Karoo Supergroup: A thick sequence of sedimentary and volcanic rocks deposited across southern Africa from the late Carboniferous to the Jurassic. Its formations make up the basin’s principal rock record.
Retroarc foreland basin: A sedimentary basin formed between a mountain belt and a continental interior as the lithosphere bends under tectonic loading. This basin model links southern African subsidence to loading along Gondwana’s convergent margin.
Karoo vertebrate fauna: A diverse succession of fossil vertebrates from southern Africa, especially Permian and Triassic therapsids and archosaurs. Its changing assemblages document ecological turnover across the basin’s strata.
Andrew Geddes Bain: A Scottish-born South African geologist and road engineer who conducted pioneering geological surveys in the Cape Colony. His early mapping helped bring the region’s rock formations into geological study.
Permian–Triassic boundary: The geological boundary marking the transition from the Permian Period to the Triassic, about 252 million years ago. Its placement in the basin’s strata anchors correlations of terrestrial change across the extinction.
Dwyka Group: A glacial sedimentary unit at the base of the Karoo Supergroup, deposited during the late Paleozoic ice age. Its glacial deposits mark the oldest major phase represented in the basin.
Cape Fold Belt: A folded and thrust-faulted mountain belt in southern South Africa formed mainly during late Paleozoic tectonism. Its deformation and loading helped create accommodation space for Karoo sediments.
Dicynodon Assemblage Zone: A Permian fossil biozone in the Beaufort Group characterized by abundant dicynodont therapsids. It exemplifies how fossil assemblages subdivide the basin’s terrestrial record.
Robert Broom: A Scottish-South African paleontologist and physician known for major discoveries of Permian and Triassic fossil reptiles. His work on Karoo fossils advanced knowledge of therapsid evolution.
Terrestrial ecosystem recovery: The rebuilding of land-based communities after environmental disruption or mass extinction. Karoo fossil assemblages track how terrestrial ecosystems changed after the end-Permian crisis.
