Kashmir Valley

A broad valley in the western Himalayas, centered on the Jhelum River and enclosed by the Pir Panjal and Greater Himalayan ranges. Its largest city is Srinagar.

Jhelum River: A major river of the western Himalayas that flows through the Kashmir Valley before entering Pakistan. It drains the valley and links its settlements to the Indus river system.
Dal Lake: An urban lake in Srinagar, known for houseboats, floating gardens, and tourism. Its shoreline and waterways are central to Srinagar’s economy and identity.

Saffron cultivation in Kashmir: The cultivation of saffron crocus in Kashmir, especially on the Karewa terraces near Pampore. Karewa soils support one of the valley’s distinctive high-value crops.
Kashmir Basin: A geological basin in the western Himalayas that includes the Kashmir Valley and surrounding ranges. The valley occupies the basin’s central lowland.
Line of Control: The military control line separating Indian- and Pakistani-administered parts of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. It lies west of the valley and shapes its wider security environment.
Kashmir Shaivism: A nondual tradition of Hindu philosophy and practice that developed in medieval Kashmir. The valley was a major center of this influential philosophical tradition.
