Kathleen Lonsdale

Kathleen Lonsdale was an Irish-born British crystallographer and chemist who advanced X-ray crystallography and showed that benzene has a planar hexagonal structure.

X-ray crystallography: A method for determining crystal structures by analyzing how X-rays diffract from a crystal. Lonsdale used diffraction measurements to establish molecular and crystal structures.
X-ray diffraction: The scattering of X-rays by matter, producing patterns that reveal structure at atomic scales. Lonsdale inferred atomic arrangements from the diffraction patterns of crystals.
William Henry Bragg: A British physicist who pioneered X-ray crystallography with his son William Lawrence Bragg. Lonsdale worked in the crystallographic tradition established by Bragg and his collaborators.
