Kauaʻi

Kauaʻi is the northernmost of the major Hawaiian Islands, formed by a shield volcano and shaped by exceptional rainfall, erosion, and coastal processes.

Hawaiian Islands: An archipelago of volcanic islands and atolls in the central Pacific Ocean. Kauaʻi is the oldest major island in this volcanic chain.
Mount Waiʻaleʻale: A high volcanic summit on Kauaʻi whose surrounding slopes receive exceptionally heavy rainfall. Its wet uplands feed streams that cut deep valleys across the island.
Alakaʻi Wilderness Preserve: A protected high-elevation plateau and wetland area in Kauaʻi’s interior. Its bogs and upland forests occupy the island’s persistently wet mountain core.
Polynesian navigation: A system of ocean voyaging that used stars, winds, waves, and other environmental cues. It enabled Polynesian settlers to reach and establish communities on Kauaʻi.
Invasive species in Hawaii: Non-native organisms that spread in the Hawaiian Islands and disrupt native ecosystems. Introduced predators and plants threaten Kauaʻi’s distinctive native habitats.
Shield volcano: A broad volcano built by repeated flows of fluid, low-viscosity lava. Kauaʻi began as a shield volcano rising from the Pacific seafloor.
Waimea Canyon: A large, deeply incised canyon on Kauaʻi’s western side. River erosion and repeated slope failures exposed the island’s layered volcanic rock.
Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge: A coastal wildlife refuge surrounding a headland and lighthouse on Kauaʻi’s north shore. The refuge protects seabird habitat along the island’s exposed coastline.
Kaumualiʻi: The last independent ruler of Kauaʻi, who negotiated the island’s eventual cession to Kamehameha I. His rule kept Kauaʻi outside Kamehameha’s kingdom until 1810.
Hawaii tropical rainforest: A tropical forest ecosystem in the Hawaiian Islands, shaped by elevation, rainfall, and isolation. Kauaʻi contains some of the wettest and most extensive rainforest habitats in Hawaii.
