Kaysanites

The Kaysanites were an early Shiite movement that recognized Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya as imam after Husayn ibn Ali’s death. Their doctrines included distinctive ideas about the imamate and the Mahdi.

Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya: A son of Ali ibn Abi Talib whom some early Shiites recognized as imam after Husayn’s death. Kaysanite allegiance centered on his claim to the imamate.
Imamate: The doctrine that divinely guided leaders, called imams, hold religious authority in Islam. Recognition of Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya as imam defined Kaysanite identity.
Abbasid Revolution: The movement that overthrew Umayyad rule and established Abbasid rule in 750. Abbasid organizers drew on pro-Hashemite opposition that had also attracted Kaysanite supporters.
Abu Amr Kaysan: A figure whom some accounts identify as the namesake of the Kaysanite movement. The movement’s name is often linked to him, though its origin is uncertain.
Battle of Karbala: The 680 battle in which Husayn ibn Ali and most of his companions were killed by Umayyad forces. Husayn’s death created the succession crisis from which Kaysanite allegiance arose.
Shiism: The branch of Islam that holds Ali and his descendants to be rightful leaders of the Muslim community. Kaysanism was one early current within the broader Shiite tradition.
Abu Muslim al-Khurasani: The military leader who directed the Abbasid revolution in Khurasan. His revolt recruited among groups shaped by earlier pro-Alid movements, including Kaysanite currents.
Kaysaniyya: An Arabic name used in medieval sources for the Kaysanite movement or related groups. Sources apply this label inconsistently to early pro-Alid factions.
Mukhtar al-Thaqafi: A revolutionary leader who led a pro-Alid revolt in Kufa from 685 to 687. His revolt mobilized support for Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya and became closely associated with Kaysanism.
Mahdi: An awaited guided leader expected in Islamic traditions to restore justice before the end of time. Some Kaysanite groups expected Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya to return as the Mahdi.
