Kazakh Steppe

The Kazakh Steppe is a vast temperate grassland across northern and central Kazakhstan, extending into parts of southern Russia. Its open plains support distinctive steppe ecosystems and long histories of pastoralism.

Eurasian Steppe: A vast belt of temperate grasslands stretching across Eurasia from Eastern Europe to northeast Asia. The Kazakh Steppe forms a central part of this larger grassland belt.
Nomadic pastoralism: A livelihood based on moving livestock between seasonal pastures rather than keeping herds in one permanent place. Mobile herding has long adapted to the steppe’s seasonal forage and water.
Scythians: Ancient Iranian-speaking peoples who lived across the Eurasian steppes and were renowned for mounted warfare. Scythian groups occupied parts of the steppe in antiquity.
Kazakh famine of 1930–1933: A catastrophic famine in Soviet Kazakhstan caused chiefly by forced collectivization and the disruption of pastoral life. Collectivization devastated herding communities across the steppe and caused mass mortality.
Steppe: A treeless or sparsely wooded grassland biome found in regions with dry climates and limited rainfall. This biome classification captures the region’s defining landscape.
Kazakh pastoralism: The traditional livestock-herding systems of Kazakh communities, historically organized around seasonal movement. Herding practices developed around the region’s wide-ranging grassland pastures.
Xiongnu: A confederation of nomadic peoples who dominated the eastern Eurasian steppe from the third century BCE. Their westward movements affected peoples and power across the broader steppe world.
Collectivization in the Soviet Union: The forced consolidation of farms and livestock into state or collective enterprises under Soviet rule. Its policies transformed land use and pastoral society in Kazakhstan.
Continental climate: A climate with large seasonal temperature ranges, generally occurring far from oceans. The steppe’s inland position brings cold winters and hot summers.
Virgin Lands campaign: A Soviet agricultural program begun in 1954 to plow extensive areas of uncultivated land, especially in northern Kazakhstan. It transformed large expanses of steppe into grain-producing farmland.
