Keichō

Keichō was a Japanese era name used from 1596 to 1615, spanning the reigns of Emperors Go-Yōzei and Go-Mizunoo. It encompassed the rise of Tokugawa rule and the establishment of Edo as Japan’s political center.

Battle of Sekigahara: A decisive 1600 battle in which Tokugawa Ieyasu defeated the coalition led by Ishida Mitsunari. Its outcome paved the way for Tokugawa dominance during Keichō.
Japanese era name: A calendar designation associated with an emperor’s reign or a significant event in Japanese history. Keichō was one named period in this system of dating.
Emperor Ōgimachi: The 106th emperor of Japan, whose reign lasted from 1557 to 1586. His abdication preceded the imperial succession that began Keichō.
Edo: The city that became Japan’s political center under the Tokugawa shogunate and was later renamed Tokyo. Tokugawa Ieyasu established his government there during Keichō.
Siege of Osaka: The 1614–1615 military campaign in which Tokugawa forces destroyed the Toyotomi stronghold at Osaka Castle. Its conclusion in 1615 coincided with the end of Keichō and the defeat of the Toyotomi.
Emperor Go-Yōzei: The 107th emperor of Japan, whose reign lasted from 1586 to 1611. His reign covered the first part of Keichō.
Tenshō: A Japanese era name used from 1573 to 1592, preceding Bunroku and Keichō. It provides an earlier era-name frame for the conflicts that preceded Keichō.
Edo period: The period of Japanese history governed by the Tokugawa shogunate from 1603 to 1868. The era’s political settlement led into this long period of Tokugawa rule.
Keichō embassy to Europe: A Japanese diplomatic mission sent to Europe in 1613 under the leadership of Hasekura Tsunenaga. It began near the era’s end and sought diplomatic and commercial ties with Spain and the papacy.
Emperor Go-Mizunoo: The 108th emperor of Japan, who reigned from 1611 to 1629. His reign covered Keichō’s final years.
