Ken Kutaragi

Ken Kutaragi is a Japanese engineer and business executive who led the creation of Sony’s PlayStation and later headed Sony Computer Entertainment.

Norio Ohga: Norio Ohga was a Japanese business executive who served as Sony’s president and chairman. Ohga backed Kutaragi’s PlayStation project when other Sony executives opposed it.
Nintendo PlayStation: Nintendo PlayStation was a prototype console developed through a failed collaboration between Nintendo and Sony. The abandoned project prompted Kutaragi to pursue a standalone Sony console.
CD-ROM: CD-ROM is an optical-disc format that stores digital data for computer access. PlayStation’s use of CDs enabled larger game worlds and lower-cost distribution than cartridges.

Shigeo Maruyama: Shigeo Maruyama was a Japanese music executive who helped establish Sony’s video game business. Maruyama helped build the Sony team that launched the PlayStation.
Super Nintendo Entertainment System: The Super Nintendo Entertainment System is Nintendo’s 16-bit home video game console, released in 1990 and 1991. Kutaragi secretly designed its Sony-made sound chip, an early step toward game hardware.
RISC architecture: RISC architecture is a processor design approach built around a relatively small set of simple instructions. The PlayStation’s main processor drew on RISC design to handle 3D graphics efficiently.
Sega Saturn: Sega Saturn is Sega’s 32-bit home console, released in 1994 and discontinued in 2000. Its competition with PlayStation showed how Sony challenged established console makers.
Hiroshi Yamauchi: Hiroshi Yamauchi led Nintendo from 1949 to 2002 and oversaw its transformation into a major video game company. Yamauchi’s Nintendo partnership with Sony collapsed, redirecting Kutaragi toward an independent console.
Sony Music Entertainment Japan: Sony Music Entertainment Japan is a Japanese record company established in 1968 as CBS/Sony Records. Its executives and distribution expertise helped give Sony’s game venture organizational support.
