Ken Thompson

Ken Thompson is an American computer scientist who co-created Unix, helped develop the C programming language, and received the 1983 Turing Award.

Unix: A multiuser operating system developed at Bell Labs, known for its portability and influence on later systems. Thompson co-created Unix with Dennis Ritchie and helped establish its design.
Unix shell: A command-line interpreter that lets users run programs and combine them with scripts and pipelines. Thompson wrote the original Unix shell, enabling interactive command execution.
Dennis Ritchie: An American computer scientist who co-created Unix and developed the C programming language. Ritchie was Thompson’s closest collaborator on Unix and C.
Belle (chess machine): A computer chess machine developed at Bell Labs that became a leading chess-playing program. Thompson co-designed its hardware and software with Joseph Condon.
Multics: A time-sharing operating system developed by MIT, Bell Labs, and General Electric. Thompson’s experience with Multics informed Unix, whose design took a simpler direction.

Joseph Condon: An American computer scientist and engineer who led hardware projects at Bell Labs. Condon collaborated with Thompson on the chess-playing computer Belle.
QED (text editor): An early interactive text editor developed at Bell Labs and influential in the Unix editor lineage. Thompson created QED before developing Unix’s text-processing environment.
Space Travel (video game): A computer game written by Ken Thompson that simulates travel among the Sun and planets. Its costly execution on Multics helped motivate Thompson to build a smaller operating system.
