Kenichi Fukui

Kenichi Fukui (1918–1998) was a Japanese chemist who shared the 1981 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing theories of chemical reaction mechanisms, especially frontier molecular orbital theory.

Frontier molecular orbital theory: A theory that explains chemical reactivity through interactions between a molecule’s highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals. Fukui’s best-known contribution predicts reactions from these frontier orbitals.
1981 Nobel Prize in Chemistry: The Nobel award shared by Kenichi Fukui and Roald Hoffmann for theories concerning the course of chemical reactions. The prize recognized Fukui’s theoretical account of reaction mechanisms.
