Kenneth Kaunda

Kenneth Kaunda was a Zambian independence leader and politician who served as Zambia’s first president from 1964 to 1991.

Northern Rhodesia: Northern Rhodesia was a British protectorate in southern Africa that became the independent Republic of Zambia in 1964. Kaunda organized against colonial rule in the territory that became Zambia.
One-party state: A one-party state is a political system in which one party holds governing authority and opposition parties are prohibited or tightly restricted. Kaunda’s government made UNIP the sole legal party in 1972.
Rupiah Banda: Rupiah Banda was a Zambian politician who served as the country’s president from 2008 to 2011. Banda’s government honored Kaunda’s legacy after his death and oversaw national mourning.
Mobutu Sese Seko: Mobutu Sese Seko was the authoritarian president of Zaire from 1965 to 1997. Both led postcolonial African states, but Mobutu’s personalist rule differed from Kaunda’s Humanist claims and eventual electoral exit.
