Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is an annual Thoroughbred race held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. It is the first race in the American Triple Crown.

Secretariat: Secretariat was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1973 Triple Crown and set lasting records. His 1973 Derby victory began a Triple Crown season remembered for a record-setting performance.
Thoroughbred: The Thoroughbred is a horse breed developed for speed and stamina, especially in flat racing. Only Thoroughbreds compete in the Derby.
Meredith G. Wilson: Meredith G. Wilson was a Kentucky horseman who helped establish the Louisville Jockey Club and Churchill Downs. He organized the effort that created the track and launched the Derby.
American Triple Crown: The American Triple Crown is a series consisting of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. The Derby is its opening race, and winning all three is a rare achievement.
