Kernite

Kernite is a hydrated sodium borate mineral with formula Na₂B₄O₆(OH)₂·3H₂O. It occurs in evaporite deposits and is mined as a boron ore.

Borate minerals: Minerals whose structures contain borate groups built from boron and oxygen. Kernite belongs to this mineral family, whose members vary in hydration and structure.
Evaporite: A sedimentary deposit formed when dissolved minerals precipitate as water evaporates. Kernite crystallizes in evaporite settings as concentrated brines precipitate borates.
Boron: A chemical element with symbol B and atomic number 5, used in materials and chemical products. Kernite is mined to supply boron for industrial use.

Boracite: A magnesium borate mineral with formula Mg₃B₇O₁₃Cl. Its magnesium-rich composition contrasts with kernite’s sodium-rich chemistry.
Brine: Water containing a high concentration of dissolved salts. Boron-rich brines supply the dissolved components from which kernite can precipitate.
