Kerr–Newman metric

An exact solution of the Einstein–Maxwell equations describing the exterior spacetime of a rotating, electrically charged mass. It generalizes the Kerr and Reissner–Nordström solutions.

Kerr metric: An exact vacuum solution of Einstein’s equations describing the spacetime around a rotating, uncharged mass. Setting the electric charge to zero reduces Kerr–Newman to this rotating vacuum geometry.
Einstein–Maxwell equations: The coupled field equations describing gravity and electromagnetic fields in general relativity. Kerr–Newman is an exact solution of this coupled system.
Roy Kerr: New Zealand mathematician who discovered the rotating vacuum solution now called the Kerr metric. Kerr’s solution supplied the rotating gravitational geometry generalized here.
Extremal black hole: A black hole whose parameters reach the limit at which its distinct horizons merge. The Kerr–Newman horizon condition defines an extremal bound on charge and rotation.
Reissner–Nordström metric: An exact Einstein–Maxwell solution describing the spacetime around a static, electrically charged mass. Setting angular momentum to zero yields this charged, nonrotating limit.
Einstein field equations: Equations relating spacetime curvature to the distribution of energy and momentum. Their gravitational part governs the geometry in the solution.
Reissner–Nordström solution: The static, spherically symmetric charged solution of the Einstein–Maxwell equations. It supplied the charged, nonrotating limit that Kerr–Newman extends.
Cauchy horizon: An inner boundary beyond which initial data no longer uniquely determine spacetime evolution. The ideal Kerr–Newman geometry contains an inner horizon of this kind.
Event horizon: A boundary beyond which events cannot causally affect distant observers. The metric’s parameters determine whether horizons exist and where they lie.
Electromagnetic field tensor: An antisymmetric tensor encoding electric and magnetic fields in relativistic electrodynamics. The solution includes an electromagnetic field sourced by the mass’s charge and rotation.
