Khanate of Kazan

The Khanate of Kazan was a Tatar state centered on Kazan from 1438 until its conquest by Ivan the Terrible in 1552. Its rulers descended from the Golden Horde and governed a Volga-region population of varied backgrounds.

Golden Horde: A Mongol successor state that ruled much of the Eurasian steppe from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century. The khanate emerged as the Golden Horde fragmented.
Khan: A sovereign or high-ranking ruler among Turkic and Mongol peoples. Khanic authority defined the state’s ruling office.
Ivan the Terrible: The grand prince of Moscow and first crowned tsar of Russia, who ruled from 1533 to 1584. He led the campaigns that captured Kazan in 1552.
Siege of Kazan (1552): The military campaign in which Ivan IV’s forces captured Kazan after a siege in 1552. The siege ended the khanate as an independent state.
Kazan: A city at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka rivers, now the capital of Tatarstan, Russia. The city became the khanate’s political center.

Ulu-Muhammad: A ruler of the Golden Horde who established himself in Kazan in the 1430s. His seizure of power laid the foundation for the khanate.
Nogai Horde: A confederation of nomadic Turkic peoples that formed north of the Caspian Sea after the Golden Horde’s decline. Nogai support and intervention affected Kazan’s succession struggles.
