Kharga Oasis

Kharga Oasis is an inhabited oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert and the largest oasis in New Valley Governorate. Its settlements and farms depend on groundwater in an otherwise arid landscape.

Western Desert: The arid region west of the Nile Valley in Egypt, part of the Sahara. Kharga lies within this desert region, whose vast distances shaped its isolation and routes.
Qanat: An underground channel that carries groundwater by gravity from an aquifer to the surface. Ancient qanat-like channels helped bring water to fields and settlements in Kharga.
Temple of Hibis: A temple in Kharga Oasis built mainly during the Persian period and dedicated to Amun. It is the oasis’s best-preserved ancient temple and a landmark of its history.
New Valley Governorate: An administrative governorate in southwestern Egypt that includes the oases of Kharga and Dakhla. Kharga is the governorate’s largest oasis and its administrative center.
Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System: A vast transboundary groundwater system beneath parts of Egypt, Libya, Sudan, and Chad. Its groundwater supplies wells across Kharga and supports settlement in the oasis.
Ain Umm Dabadib: An archaeological site in Kharga Oasis with Roman-period remains and an extensive water system. Its waterworks provide a striking local example of engineering in the oasis.
Darius I: King of the Achaemenid Persian Empire from 522 to 486 BCE. An inscription at Hibis associates the temple’s construction with his reign.
Kharga Airport: An airport serving Kharga, the capital of New Valley Governorate in Egypt. It connects the remote oasis with other parts of Egypt by air.
Oasis: A fertile area in an arid region where water supports vegetation and human settlement. Kharga is a large, inhabited example of this desert landform.
Dar al-Arba'in: A historic caravan route linking the Nile region with Darfur through Egypt’s Western Desert. Kharga served as a major staging point on this trans-Saharan route.
