Khasekhemwy

Khasekhemwy was the last ruler of Egypt’s Second Dynasty, reigning around the late 27th century BCE. His reign is associated with ending internal conflict and reunifying Upper and Lower Egypt.

Second Dynasty of Egypt: The second ruling dynasty of ancient Egypt, conventionally dated to the early third millennium BCE. Khasekhemwy was its final king, succeeding a period of contested rule.
Shunet el-Zebib: A large mudbrick funerary enclosure at Abydos, generally identified with Khasekhemwy. Its scale and construction make it a major surviving monument of his reign.
Horus name: The oldest form of an Egyptian king’s titulary, written within a serekh and associated with Horus. Khasekhemwy’s Horus name expressed royal authority after the conflict of his reign.
Third Dynasty of Egypt: The dynasty that followed Egypt’s Second Dynasty and began the Old Kingdom. Khasekhemwy’s reign preceded the political order associated with the Third Dynasty.
Abydos King List: A New Kingdom inscription at Abydos listing selected Egyptian kings in a ritual sequence. Its much later record helps frame questions about how early rulers were remembered.
Peribsen: An early Egyptian king of the Second Dynasty associated with using the god Seth in his royal name. His reign is linked to the period of division that Khasekhemwy’s reunification followed.
Khasekhemwy statue from Hierakonpolis: A seated stone statue of Khasekhemwy found at Hierakonpolis and now held by the Ashmolean Museum. Its inscriptions and royal imagery provide direct evidence for his titulary and claims.
Nebty name: An element of Egyptian royal titulary associating the king with the protective goddesses Nekhbet and Wadjet. Khasekhemwy’s combined royal names are associated with claims to rule both parts of Egypt.
Djoser: An Egyptian king of the Third Dynasty whose reign is associated with the Step Pyramid at Saqqara. His rule followed Khasekhemwy’s and belongs to the next phase of monumental royal building.
Turin King List: A fragmentary ancient Egyptian papyrus listing kings and reign lengths, compiled in the New Kingdom. Its damaged entries complicate efforts to establish precise early dynastic chronology.
