Khema

Khema was a prominent disciple of the Buddha, renowned in Buddhist tradition for her wisdom and discernment. She became a leading nun and teacher in the early Buddhist community.

Gautama Buddha: Gautama Buddha was an Indian spiritual teacher whose teachings founded Buddhism. Khema became one of his foremost female disciples and was praised for her wisdom.
Khema Sutta: The Khema Sutta is a Buddhist discourse in which Khema explains why the Buddha cannot be found as a self after death. Its exchange with King Pasenadi portrays her ability to reason clearly about the Buddha’s liberation.
Anattā: Anattā is the Buddhist teaching that no permanent, independent self exists. Khema’s discourse to Pasenadi applies this teaching to the question of the Buddha’s fate after death.
Pali Canon: The Pali Canon is the collection of scriptures preserved in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. Its discourses and verses are the principal textual sources for Khema’s remembered teachings.
Mahapajapati Gotami: Mahapajapati Gotami was the first woman ordained into the Buddhist monastic community. Her ordination established the nuns’ order in which Khema became a leading figure.
Khemātherī Gāthā: The Khemātherī Gāthā is a verse attributed to the Buddhist nun Khemā in the Therīgāthā. The poem preserves a first-person voice associated with Khema’s insight and renunciation.
Nibbāna: Nibbāna is the Buddhist liberation from craving, suffering, and the cycle of rebirth. Khema’s accounts present her wisdom within the path toward liberation.
Theravada: Theravada is a Buddhist tradition grounded in the Pali Canon and practiced across South and Southeast Asia. Khema’s best-known textual accounts survive in scriptures central to this tradition.
Uppalavanna: Uppalavanna was a prominent Buddhist nun renowned for her meditative attainments and spiritual powers. She was Khema’s celebrated counterpart, foremost among the Buddha’s female disciples in meditative power.
Therīgāthā: The Therīgāthā is a collection of verses attributed to early Buddhist nuns in the Pali canon. It transmits verses linked to Khema alongside the voices of other early nuns.
