Knowra Khon Khon Khon is a Thai masked dance drama combining stylized movement, piphat music, spoken narration, and episodes from the Ramakien. Performers traditionally wear elaborate costumes and masks to portray the epic’s characters.
Ramakien : Thailand’s national epic, adapted from the Indian Ramayana and centered on the war between Rama and Thotsakan. Its episodes and characters supply Khon’s main dramatic material.
Khon gesture : A stylized hand, arm, or bodily movement used in Khon to express action, emotion, or character. Gestures communicate dramatic meaning within Khon’s tightly patterned choreography.
Ayutthaya Kingdom : A Siamese kingdom that ruled much of mainland Southeast Asia from 1351 until its destruction in 1767. Khon is associated with court performance traditions that flourished in Ayutthaya.
Lakhon : A family of Thai dance-drama forms, generally performed without the full face masks characteristic of Khon. Its less mask-centered performance convention distinguishes it from Khon.
