Khosrow I

Khosrow I ruled the Sasanian Empire from 531 to 579. He expanded its territory and reshaped its taxation, administration, and military organization.

Sasanian Empire: The Iranian empire ruled by the Sasanian dynasty from 224 to 651. Khosrow’s reforms and campaigns shaped the empire at the height of its power.
Sasanian land tax: A tax on agricultural land in the Sasanian Empire, assessed according to land and expected produce. Khosrow replaced irregular assessments with more systematic land-tax collection.
Kavad I: Sasanian king who ruled from 488 to 531 and was Khosrow I’s father. Kavad’s disputed policies and restoration shaped the political inheritance Khosrow received.

Mazdak: A late fifth-century Iranian religious and social reformer associated with a movement challenging elite privilege. Khosrow became known for suppressing the movement supported during his father’s reign.
Siege of Antioch (540): The Sasanian capture and sack of Antioch in 540 during Khosrow I’s invasion of Byzantine territory. The raid demonstrated the reach of his forces deep into Roman Syria.
Khosrow II: A Sasanian king who ruled from 590 to 628 and briefly conquered much of the Byzantine Near East. His reign extended the military rivalry that Khosrow I had intensified.
Sasanian bureaucracy: The administrative offices and officials through which Sasanian kings governed the empire. Khosrow relied on central officials to implement taxation and supervise provinces.
