Khrushchev Thaw

A period of relative political and cultural liberalization in the Soviet Union under Nikita Khrushchev, from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s.

De-Stalinization: The dismantling of Joseph Stalin’s political system and public cult after his death. Khrushchev’s 1956 denunciation of Stalin helped open space for reform and cultural relaxation.
Gulag: The Soviet system of forced-labor camps and prisons operating under state security agencies. Releasing many prisoners weakened a central instrument of Stalinist repression without dismantling the system.
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich: A 1962 novella by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn depicting one prisoner’s day in a Soviet labor camp. Its official publication made the Gulag’s reality newly visible to Soviet readers.
Death of Joseph Stalin: The death of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin on 5 March 1953, followed by a struggle over his succession. It created the political opening in which Khrushchev and other leaders began changing policy.
Ilya Ehrenburg: A Soviet writer and journalist whose 1954 novel The Thaw gave the period its enduring name. His novel’s title became shorthand for a change in the political and cultural climate.

Lavrentiy Beria: A Soviet security chief and politician, arrested in 1953 and executed later that year. Beria’s removal weakened the security apparatus associated with Stalinist terror.
Sixth World Festival of Youth and Students: An international youth festival held in Moscow in 1957, attended by tens of thousands of foreign visitors. The festival brought unprecedented contact with foreign cultures to many Soviet citizens.
