Khwarazm

Khwarazm is a historical region around the lower Amu Darya, centered on the river’s delta and adjoining desert oases in present-day Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

Amu Darya: The river that flows from the Pamirs through Central Asia into the Aral Sea basin. Its lower reaches and delta sustained Khwarazm’s settlements and agriculture.
Kunya-Urgench: A historic city in Turkmenistan, known for medieval monuments and its former role as a Khwarazmian capital. Its surviving architecture marks the region’s medieval urban and political importance.
Irrigation: The deliberate supply of water to land for agriculture. Khwarazm’s farms depended on channels that diverted river water across arid ground.
Mongol conquest of Khwarazm: The Mongol campaign of 1219–1221 that destroyed the Khwarazmian Empire’s power. The conquest devastated major cities and ended Khwarazm’s medieval imperial prominence.
Avestan geography: The places and regions named in the Avesta, the sacred texts of Zoroastrianism. Some scholars associate the ancient name Khwarazm with places recorded in early Iranian tradition.

Chorasmia: The ancient Greek and Latin name for the region of Khwarazm and its inhabitants. Classical accounts preserve an early name for Khwarazm and its political connections.
Ayaz-Kala: A group of ancient fortresses in the desert near the Amu Darya delta in Uzbekistan. The fortresses demonstrate how communities defended the oasis’s agricultural frontier.
