Khwarazmian Empire

A Central Asian empire ruled by the Khwarazmshah dynasty, reaching its height under Ala al-Din Muhammad II before Mongol conquest in the early 13th century.

Anushtegin Gharchai: A Turkic military slave who became governor of Khwarazm and founded the dynasty that ruled the Khwarazmian Empire. His appointment as governor began the dynasty’s rise in Khwarazm.
Ala al-Din Muhammad II: The Khwarazmshah who ruled from 1200 to 1220 and brought the empire to its greatest territorial extent. His conquests created the empire that confronted the Mongols.
Battle of Qatwan: A 1141 battle in which the Qara Khitai defeated the Seljuq sultan Sanjar and his allies near Samarkand. The defeat weakened Seljuq control and opened space for Khwarazmian expansion.
Mongol Empire: The empire founded by Genghis Khan that became the largest contiguous land empire in history. Its expansion absorbed Khwarazmian lands into a far larger imperial system.
Abbasid Caliphate: A caliphate founded in 750 that ruled much of the Islamic world from Baghdad for centuries. Khwarazmian rulers sought political authority that could rival the caliph’s symbolic standing.
Seljuq Empire: A medieval empire ruled by a Turkic dynasty that dominated much of the Middle East and Central Asia. Khwarazm’s governors first exercised authority under Seljuq rule.
Jalal al-Din Mingburnu: The last major Khwarazmshah, who fought the Mongols after his father’s empire collapsed. He continued resistance after the imperial heartland was lost.
Qara Khitai: A Central Asian empire founded by the Khitan ruler Yelü Dashi, also known as the Western Liao dynasty. Its overlordship constrained Khwarazmian ambitions before the empire’s rise.
Ilkhanate: A Mongol khanate founded in the 13th century that ruled Iran and neighboring regions. It later governed much of the former Khwarazmian heartland.
Ghurid dynasty: A dynasty that ruled parts of Afghanistan and northern India during the 12th and early 13th centuries. Its competing expansion into eastern Iran and Central Asia differed from Khwarazmian consolidation.
