Kido Takayoshi

Kido Takayoshi (1833–1877), also known as Katsura Kogorō, was a Chōshū samurai and statesman who helped overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate and build the Meiji government.

Ōkubo Toshimichi: A Satsuma statesman who helped lead the Meiji Restoration and centralize Japan’s new government. He partnered with Kido and Saigō Takamori in the alliance that brought down the shogunate.
Satsuma–Chōshū Alliance: A 1866 political and military alliance between the Satsuma and Chōshū domains against the Tokugawa shogunate. Kido helped negotiate the pact that joined his domain to its former rival.
Sonnō jōi: A late Edo political slogan meaning “revere the emperor, expel the barbarians.” Kido’s early Chōshū politics grew from this movement before he embraced pragmatic modernization.
Centralization in Meiji Japan: The transfer of political and administrative authority from Japan’s domains to a national government after 1868. Kido helped replace domain rule with a unified state apparatus.
Saigō Takamori: A Satsuma samurai and Meiji leader who later led the Satsuma Rebellion. His cooperation with Kido helped unite Satsuma and Chōshū against the shogunate.
Meiji Restoration: The political transformation beginning in 1868 that ended Tokugawa rule and established imperial government in Japan. Kido was one of its central architects and helped shape the new regime.
Abolition of the han system: The 1871 reform that replaced Japan’s feudal domains with centrally governed prefectures. Kido backed the measure that dismantled the domains whose leaders had made the Restoration.
Meiji Constitution of 1889: The constitutional framework promulgated in Japan in 1889 and effective from 1890. Its creation fulfilled part of Kido’s earlier advocacy for constitutional government.
Iwakura Tomomi: A court noble and Meiji statesman who led the Iwakura Mission abroad. Kido joined his 1871 mission to study foreign institutions and negotiate treaty revision.
Boshin War: The 1868–1869 civil war between forces supporting imperial rule and the Tokugawa shogunate. Kido’s Chōshū forces fought in the conflict that secured the Restoration.
