Kievan Rus'

A medieval polity centered on Kyiv that united East Slavic and Finnic lands under the Rurikid dynasty from the late ninth to the mid-thirteenth century.

Rurikid dynasty: A dynasty traditionally traced to Rurik that ruled Kievan Rus' and several successor principalities. Its princes governed the lands through family claims and negotiated authority.
Rurik: A ninth-century figure whom later chronicles identify as the founder of the Rurikid ruling dynasty. Later dynastic tradition made him the starting point of Rus' princely rule.
Vladimir the Great: A prince of Kyiv who ruled from 980 to 1015 and adopted Byzantine Christianity for his realm. His conversion redirected the polity's religious and diplomatic ties.
Christianization of Kievan Rus': The adoption of Byzantine Christianity by Vladimir the Great and the subsequent conversion of his realm. It transformed religious practice, literacy, art, and diplomacy across the polity.

Mongol invasion of Kievan Rus': The Mongol conquest of Rus' principalities in the thirteenth century, culminating in Kyiv's sack in 1240. The invasion ended Kyiv's dominant political role and reordered Rus' lands.
Golden Horde: A Mongol khanate that ruled much of the western steppe and exerted authority over many Rus' principalities. Its overlordship replaced the earlier balance among Rus' princes after the conquest.
